20,000 tons of diesel spilled into the river, causing a loss of half a million dollars to the Russian government

Russia's Siberian province has reported a spill of 20,000 tonnes of diesel.  Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a state of emergency in the Siberian city of Norkilsk after 14,000 tonnes of diesel was dumped in the waterway and 3,000 tonnes on surrounding land.  Since then, Russian government teams have been working to clean up the spilled oil.  According to a report in the Russian newspaper Moscow Times, the accident caused a loss of 20 million dollars.

The incident happened five days ago, but the Russian government is now waking up and operating.  The accident took place when a fuel tank in a thermal power plant broke down.  This will cause great damage to the local environment and along the waterways wherever diesel flows.  An investigation into why the tank exploded is ongoing.  The spilled oil has now spread to a distance of 20 square kilometers.

The manager of the power plant was immediately arrested and sent to jail.  Strict action will also be taken against the company as Russian President Putin is outraged by the tragedy.  Russian officials say it will take at least two weeks to clean up the spilled oil.  Of course, in that time the surrounding oil will be cleared.  Oil mixed with water and soil can take ten to five years to clean up.

The Moscow government, on the other hand, has handed over the investigation into the incident to Russia's Investigative Agency.  This is the second major fuel accident reported in Russia.  Crude oil spilled in the 19th Komi region after Russia's 191 re-creation.  Then this big accident is reported.
